UK: Police pledge to hit cannabis farms

---
POLICE in Greater Manchester have promised to close "skunk" cannabis
factories as part of a national campaign to crack down on a potent form
of the drug.

GMP is among 19 forces taking part in Operation Keymer, set up to crack
down on the criminal gangs that operate illegal cannabis factories.

The force has vowed to arrest the criminals behind the farms and freeze
their assets during the two-week campaign and destroy the perception it
is a "low risk, high profit" crime.

The new crackdown follows the seizure of 6,000 cannabis plants and the
arrest of 87 people during separate operations in Greater Manchester
last year.

In April police found a cannabis factory at a house on Marland Way,
Stretford. Officers seized between 800 and 1,000 plants.

In July, the M.E.N. reported how drugs worth more than £1m were seized
by police in an operation targeting suspected dealers across Bury.

Resin

The haul included more than 2,000 cannabis plants, 36 blocks of cannabis
resin, 10 kilos of crack cocaine worth £10,000, two kilos of heroin,
ecstasy and amphetamines. Thirteen houses were raided and nine men were
arrested.

Police say "hundreds" of cannabis factories will be raided across the
country in the next fortnight, many of them in Greater Manchester.
Officers say they will concentrate on closing down factories producing
"skunk", the most potent form of cannabis.

A GMP spokesman said: "Operation Keymer will see officers across Greater
Manchester closing cannabis factories in the region, arresting offenders
and using the Proceeds of Crimes Act to attack the profits being made.
We aim to send out a clear message that cannabis production is a serious
offence and offenders will be brought to justice."
