US: NORML newsletter addresses drug tests and cannabis for hepatitis
Chris Durant Times-Standard
Monday 25 Sep 2006 An observational study from the University of California at San Francisco has inspired researchers to recommend that patients use marijuana to fight side effects related to the treatment of hepatitis C. According the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws weekly newsletter, researchers in Canada will be publishing the recommendation in the October issue of the European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology. Researchers said marijuana can treat side effects like fatigue, headaches and nausea and has “potential benefits of a higher likelihood of treatment success.” The NORML newsletter also stated that the use of workplace drug testing to discourage employee drug use is overrated. In a study be published in an upcoming issue of Health Services Research, researchers state that previous studies on the topic “slightly overstated” estimates of drug tests used as deterrents because certain factors, like employee assistant programs, were left out. The study states that businesses nationwide spend about $6 billion a year on drug testing. http://www.times-standard.com/local/ci_4392814
