Syria: Drug Fighting in Syria - Statistics

The statistics of Drug Fighting Department at the Syrian Interior
Ministry said Wednesday that during the first half of 2006 more than 51
tons of (cannabis) hashish, 2,570 kg of heroin, 8 kg of opium and
2,005,889 Captagon tablets and 130,067 of other ecstasy drugs were seized.

The figures showed also that the number of the lawsuits connected to
drugs during the same period reached 1,319 while the number of persons
accused was 2,013.

The official documents said the percentage of drug addicts in Syria was
one of the minimum rates in the world as it didn't exceed 150 person per
million people according to latest statistics prepared by local and
international circles specialized in this field.
