UK: Farmers spot 'unusual plants' to bust cannabis factory
icSurreyOnLine
Thursday 28 Sep 2006 EAGLE-EYED farmers have helped police bust a village cannabis factory. Officers discovered 50 large cannabis plants growing in a field in Westcott, after receiving information from local farmers. They had noticed the unusual plants growing in the middle of the field, which they were preparing to harvest. Mole Valley rural affairs officer PC Martin Savage discovered the plants after searching the area, on on Wednesday last week. Another 20 plants were also found in a steel container unit set up nearby. PC Savage paid tribute to the Farmwatch scheme, which was set up to improve links between farmers and the police. He says the drugs haul represents a "great success" for the scheme and shows the value of the "strong community links" officers have built up in the village. PC Savage said: "I know some people may regard cannabis offences less seriously, but we will continue to take robust action against anyone who is involved in its supply or cultivation." He added: "I hope this brings the message home that production of cannabis is still illegal. "We will continue to investigate offenders with the intention of bringing them before the courts to face justice." A 42-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, both from Westcott, were arrested on suspicion of cannabis cultivation. They have both been released on police bail, pending further enquiries. The discovery follows a report in the Advertiser on September 7, in which Surrey Police urged the public to help them track down illegal cannabis farms in Mole Valley. Concerns have been growing that a police crackdown in London had driven drug gangs out to quieter areas in the suburbs. http://icsurreyonline.icnetwork.co.uk/
