UK: Cannabis factory discovered
Kara Bradley Coventry Observer
Monday 02 Oct 2006 POLICE uncovered a cannabis factory in Woodway Park last Wednesday (September 27), just days after a nationwide clampdown on those who grow the drug in houses was launched. The factory, in Peacock Avenue, contained 27 cannabis plants, and heat lamps and associated equipment to help them grow. Officers said that as with anything where an extreme amount of electricity was being used, it posed a fire hazard. WDC Jo Debarbaro said although the factory was not as extensive as some discovered in the past, there were still plenty of plants. "It was not a big factory, but it was big enough," she said. The house as occupied and was not being used just for drug cultivation. The crackdown launched last Monday saw seventeen police forces across the country, including West Midlands, pledge to hunt down the gangs responsible for cannabis factories in suburban areas. Raids will be carried out for two weeks at addresses where officers believe the class C drug is being grown. Home Office drugs minister Vernon Coaker, who visited Coventry earlier this year, vowed that the people who grow and deal cannabis will face tough penalties - up to 14 years in prison for cultivating and dealing. • A man was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of cultivation but had not been charged at the time of going to press. http://coventry.observertoday.co.uk/
