UK: Police raid third drug farm in crackdown

Peterborough Today

Monday 02 Oct 2006

---
A CRACKDOWN on cannabis farms in Peterborough reaped another success
today as police seized 300 plants from a city centre house.
Inside the house in Bourges Boulevard, Peterborough, police found four
rooms full of cannabis plants with an estimated street value of £40,000.

About 20 police officers stormed into the house at 7.30am and discovered
hundreds of plants growing both upstairs and downstairs.

A man, believed to be of Vietnamese descent and in his late 20s, was
arrested on suspicion of producing cannabis and taken to Thorpe Wood
police station for questioning.

It follows two similar raids at the end of last week. The raids are part
of Operation Keymer, a two-week national crackdown on the production of
cannabis in the UK.

Detective Constable Shanie Nayar led this morning's raid.

He said: "Again we found lighting and transformers which would be used
to speed the plants growth.

"We find out about the premises growing cannabis by liaising with the
community and receiving tip-offs."

Last Thursday police swooped on a house in Cambridge Avenue, Millfield,
and found crops with an estimated street value of £200,000.

Tan Van Nguyen (30) and Truong Cao (33), of no fixed abode, charged with
producing cannabis, are due to appear at Peterborough Magistrates' Court
on Friday in connection with the incident.

A 16-year-old boy from Peterborough pleaded guilty to producing
cannabis, and was due to appear at Peterborough Youth Court today.

On Friday, police uncovered £250,000 worth of the crop following a raid
at an old Victorian mansion in Eastfield Road, close to Peterborough
Regional College.

Three men and a woman – Dang Trong (30), Hong Minh Nguyen (38) and Thanh
Thi Bui (38), all of no fixed address, and Dong To (30) – from New
Cross, London, have all been charged with producing cannabis in
connection with the incident.

They were all due to appear at Peterborough Magistrates' Court today.

The operation continues.
