UK: Drug users seeking help

icCoventry

Tuesday 03 Oct 2006

---
MORE than 18,700 drug users from across the West Midlands received
treatment in the past year, new figures show.

The figure reflects a rise of 18 per cent on the previous year,
according to the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse (NTASM).

The most frequently used drugs reported by adult users are heroin (80
per cent or 13,960), crack or cocaine (7 per cent), methadone or other
opiates (6 per cent) and cannabis (5 per cent).

David Skidmore, NTASM regional manager, said: "More people in the West
Midlands are receiving the treatment they need and more are staying in
treatment longer, which increases the chances of their treatment being
effective.

"Effective drug treatment delivers benefits to individuals, reduces the
spread of blood-borne viruses such as HIV and hepatitis within the
population at large, and improves the safety of communities by reducing
drug-related crime."
