UK: Cops swoop on cannabis factory

Bexley Times

Wednesday 04 Oct 2006

---
COPS swooped on property as part of a major crackdown against suspected
indoor cannabis farms.

Officers from Greenwich police carried out a drugs raid in Parry Place,
Woolwich, where they recovered 6,000 cannabis plants.

Two men were charged on suspicion of cultivating cannabis on September
26. David Johnstone, 40, of no fixed abode has also been charged with
assault on police.

Jason Mizzy, 35, of no fixed abode, appeared alongside Johnstone at
Woolwich Magistrates' Court last Thursday and were remanded in custody
to reappear at Woolwich Crown Court today.

During a search, police seized hundreds of pounds worth of hydroponics -
equipment which is used for growing the plants.

Greenwich borough commander chief superintendent Peter Lowton said:
"This operation confirms that intelligence-led policing plays an
important part in tackling this type of organised crime, much of our
information comes from members of the public.

"Criminal groups who set up and run cannabis factories are involved in
serious and organised crime, including illegal people trafficking,
prostitution and DVD piracy, amongst others things."

The swoop in Greenwich was one of hundreds being carried out by
seventeen police forces across England and Wales.

It is estimated that gangs can make up to £30,000 with just 200 plants.

Allan Gibson, commander at the Metropolitan police, said: "Cannabis
cultivation is an increasing problem which must be nipped in the bud.

"Cannabis cultivation is seen by criminals as a low risk, high profit
industry but this operation will send out a clear message that cannabis
production is a serious offence and that offenders will be brought to
justice.

"Not only is the money made from cannabis cultivation ploughed back into
serious crime but the bypassing of the electricity needed to run the
factories causes risk of fire and electrocution and they have already
caused several devastating fires."
