US: Local men may get 40-year terms in marijuana case
Heidi Rowley Tucson Citizen
Thursday 05 Oct 2006 Two Tucson men have been convicted in U.S. District Court of conspiracy to transport drugs. Mark A. Simmons, 35, and Ernest R. Washington, 37, were found guilty by a Tucson jury Wednesday. Prosecutors said the men plotted to move the drugs between Tucson and Ohio. During the investigation, officials seized about 1,500 pounds of marijuana while it was being transported between the states. Evidence at the trial showed the men used rental cars and tractor trailers in 2003 and 2004 to transport the drugs. Three kilograms of cocaine seized in Philadelphia were also linked to the two, authorities said. A drug conspiracy conviction carries a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison. Sentencing for the men is scheduled for Dec. 14. http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/daily/local/28396.php
