UK: Cannabis plants seized in raid

---
A cannabis factory in a flat in Sunbury has been shut down just days
after the launch of a national crackdown on the plant's supply.

Surrey Police seized more than 300 cannabis plants from the Sunbury
residence last week. Officers had been executing a warrant at the
address in Elm Court in relation to another matter and discovered 347
plants and a complex range of equipment used to cultivate them.

A man and woman, both from Sunbury, were arrested on suspicion of
producing cannabis and taken to Staines police station. They were later
also arrested for abstracting electricity. The pair remain in custody.

The seizure comes as a national crackdown on the cultivation and supply
of cannabis is launched.

Detective Chief Inspector of North Surrey Police, Ray Blythe, said:
"Cannabis cultivation is an increasing problem in many areas and Surrey
Police does not want it to become established in North Surrey.

"Those criminals running illegal cannabis factories can expect to be
arrested, their businesses closed down, and their assets seized.

"Local people are likely to be the first to notice unusual activity
which could be a cannabis factory and I would appeal to the community to
report their suspicions. The production of cannabis is illegal, and we
will continue to investigate offenders with the intention of bringing
them before the courts to face justice. "

Members of the public can help identify cannabis factories. Some
telltale signs of the illegal activity include windows that are
permanently covered from the inside; visits to the premises occurring at
unusual times of the day or night and the cannabis being removed in
black bin bags or laundry bags. There may also be noise coming from the
equipment such as cooling fans.

Cannabis use is illegal with a maximum of two years' imprisonment for
possession and a maximum of 14 years' imprisonment for anyone caught
supplying it.
