UK: Police swoop on cannabis farm
Hartlepool Mail
Friday 06 Oct 2006 ALMOST 100 cannabis plants worth a potential £35,000 were uncovered when police swooped on an industrial unit. The plants were found in a purpose-built shed that had been constructed inside a compound in the Usworth Industrial Estate, Hartlepool. It was fitted with timers, ultra-violet lights, a watering system, feed, fans and air vents. Hartlepool Drugs Unit had received intelligence that the farm was being cultivated in the unit, off Brenda Road, and checked before it pounced using the force helicopter. The helicopter's infra-red camera picked up heat from the lights and officers were then given the go-ahead to make their way inside around 9.30am yesterday. Scenes of crime officers then photographed the drug before sending it for forensic testing. Sergeant Ken Bennett said: "We found 98 cannabis plants in the unit. They aren't mature plants, but when they are mature they're worth about £300 each. "We used the helicopter to help us identify what we believed was here. We came down about 9.30am and found the plants and the equipment inside this purpose-made shed. "Scenes of crime officers have been photographing the plants, and they'll be sent away for tests and identification and then they'll be destroyed. "The team will then dismantle the shed." Sgt Bennett and his team are continuing to investigate who is behind the set-up. http://www.hartlepoolmail.co.uk/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=1109&ArticleID=1809699
