Mental health charity Rethink today (October 13) called on the
government to honour its pledge for a 'massive campaign' educate people
about the risks of cannabis use, on the day that the government
published its report on drug classification.

Rethink's Director of Public Affairs Paul Corry said: "We welcome the
government's announcement today that they believe it is vital to focus
on educating people about the dangers of drugs. However, Charles Clarke
made a similar pledge about a cannabis education campaign nine months
ago, and we have yet to see this promise delivered. The Home Office
personnel may have changed, but the mental health risks of cannabis remain.

"The evidence base that confirms the link between cannabis and mental
health problems is now solid. The science backs up the experience of
many of our members and supporters: they know first-hand that cannabis
is not a risk free drug.

"Home Office figures show that cannabis use is falling among 16-24 year
olds, which is good news, but cannabis doubles or triples the risk of
psychosis if used by under 18s. The government must address this with an
education campaign at young people."
