Wales: Cannabis-grower fed up with paying street prices

A cannabis user told a court he started growing his own because he was
fed up with paying street prices.

Darren Leach, 22, had 23 cannabis plants at his home when police called
there to arrest someone else. Cardiff Magistrates' Court heard police
could hear movement inside when they went to the house in Coleford
Drive, St Mellons, Cardiff, although nobody answered the door at first.

Richard Paul, prosecuting, said Leach refused to allow police into his
house and opened the door only slightly. But there was a strong smell of
cannabis coming from inside, so he was arrested and the house searched.

The court heard a large amount of equipment related to growing cannabis
was found.

In interview, Leach said he was a daily user of the drug and growing it
was cheaper than buying it.

Mike Hall, defending, said: '

Because he wanted so much he took matters into his own hands.'

He pleaded guilty to the possession and production of cannabis resin.

Presiding magistrate Myra Jenkins gave Leach a 12-month community
supervision order, ordered him to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work and
pay £55 court costs.
