UK: Huge cannabis factory found in Wigan mill

Wigan Today

Thursday 09 Nov 2006

---
POLICE have discovered a massive cannabis factory inside a Wigan
industrial unit.
The drug-making operation was so large it took teams of officers THREE
days to clear all the cannabis cultivating equipment from the unit at
Eckersley Mill.
Police believe tens of thousands of pounds worth of strong "skunk weed"
was being produced at the factory and being sold across the borough.
It is thought it's discovery will have significantly disrupted the
supply of the drug to the streets of Wigan.
Police have not yet arrested anyone in connection with the large scale
operation, but say they have a prime suspect.
Wigan officers raided the industrial unit following an anonymous tip off.
Police executed the search warrant the same day as the information was
received.
Inside the unit officers seized a substantial amount of "skunk weed"
some of which was bagged up in binliners ready to be sorted into smaller
packages for sale.
They also recovered a large quantity of hydroponics and lighting
equipment used in the cultivation of cannabis.
A quantity of suspected ecstasy tablets were also seized and have been
sent off for forensic analysis.
Wigan township police inspector Glenn Jones, who headed the police
operation, said: "The size of the factory was such that it took officers
three days to clear it, even with one day's assistance from the tactical
aid unit.
"We believe the factory had the capability to produce tens of thousands
of pounds worth of skunk every few months.
"We have a prime suspect in relation to this offence who we will be
speaking to in the very near future to assist the investigation.
"This individual was producing a substantial amount of cannabis and was
making a substantial amount of money
"We initially found a large bin bag full of skunk and subsequently found
further bags after a more thorough search.
"We have no doubt that in the Wigan area this person could potentially
have been one of the main suppliers."
