UK: Jailed dealer had 4000 UKP of drugs

Burnley Citizen

Thursday 09 Nov 2006

---
A DRUG dealer who had £4,000 worth of cannabis at his home has been
jailed for six months.

Shane Barker, 23, didn't think he was doing wrong - but a judge at
Burnley Crown Court said psychiatric hospitals up and down the country
were full of people suffering psychosis induced by using the drug.

Barker's girlfriend, Donna Ummur, 28, who was said to spend £50 a week -
a quarter of her wages - on the drug, was spared jail, after admitting
two counts of possessing cannabis.

Sentencing Barker, who claimed the drugs were for personal use, Judge
Pamela Badley told him she was passing the shortest sentence her public
duty would allow.

She went on: "You kept a large amount of cannabis, certainly more than
would be expected for personal use."

The judge, who described co-defendant Ummur as a "bulk buyer cannabis
user", told her she thought she had been misguided.

Barker, of Belgrave Street, Brierfield, admitted two charges of
possessing cannabis with intent to supply. Ummur, of Clitheroe Road,
Brierfield, was fined £300.

David Macro, prosecuting, told the court police went to Belgrave Street
in March and found cannabis in a safe and in the sideboard.

Martin Hackett, for Barker, said some of the drugs were his and some he
was keeping for a friend.

Mr Hackett said there was no evidence the defendant was standing on
street corners dealing in drugs, or of money or a lavish lifestyle.

Mr Hackett continued: "He was a cannabis user. He bought in bulk.

"He was doing a favour for a friend. He had people calling round to the
house and would have shared the drugs with them."

For Ummur, John Woodward said she earned £800 a month and spent £50 a
week on cannabis.
