UK: Drug raid police make 100th arrest

---
A SUSPECTED drug dealer got an early morning shock when police smashed
their way into his home in Bretton, Peterborough.

The man was fast asleep in bed when officers stormed the house in
Adderley, Bretton, Peterborough, yelling "Police, don't move".

After an extensive search of the terraced home a carrier bag, which
police say contained cannabis worth about £2,800, was found in the
freezer, along with growing equipment in the loft.

For Cambridgeshire police, this was their 100th successful raid in
Peterborough, since they started the Door A Day campaign – a crackdown
against Class A, B and C drugs and stolen property – in March this year.

The campaign aims to clamp down on organised crime and like its name
suggests, targets one door per day. So far about 130 raids have taken
place, with 100 of them leading to an arrest – giving officers an 85 per
cent success rate.

Detective Inspector Dave Murphy, who was in charge of today's drugs
bust, said: "For a place like Peterborough, a total of 100 successful
raids is exceptional in my point of view.

"And we believe there are still many homes in the city where cannabis is
being grown and drugs and stolen property are being sold.

"In the recent national crackdown on cannabis production – Operation
Keymer – Peterborough came second only to the Met Office in London in
terms of the amount of drugs factories we found. One reason for this is
that the city is practically a suberb of London, we are only a short
train ride away and criminals perceive the city to be a soft touch and
tell all their friends to come here.

"However, the message now seems to be getting across that we will not
stand for organised crime here."

DI Murphy added: "I am very pleased, this is the result of an enormous
amount of hard work from officers across the division and it illustrates
why Cambridgeshire Police is the fastest improving force in the country
in terms of success with raids.

"We are really clamping down on crime involving drugs. We are not
targeting the 19-year-old students with a spliff, we are talking about
the organised groups who grow cannabis as part of their empire."

A 23-year-old man was arrested on possession with intent to supply and
was being questioned at Thorpe Wood police station.
