Student Says His Drug Test Is Foolproof
HappyNews.com
Wednesday 15 Nov 2006 A student at the Arkansas High School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts has helped develop a drug test billed as being faster and easier to administer than tests currently available — and that is foolproof. Marc Hosken, a senior, said his new oral-based test can be observed directly. Traditional urine tests aren't directly observed and a subject can cheat by diluting or substituting the specimen. ''There's no way to cheat the test, because there isn't time,'' Hosken said. ''In 10 years, I predict it will become the predominant drug test.'' Results can be available in 15 minutes, said Hosken, 17. ''It can become a roadside test. You don't need a lab,'' he said. He said the oral, fluid-based test is much faster and less expensive than blood exams that require laboratory analysis. It can also accurately test for specific types of drugs and their quantity. Police in Victoria, Australia, use similar saliva tests to detect drivers under the influence of amphetamines and cannabis. Hosken said his test will simultaneously check for cocaine, opiates, PCP, methamphetamine and marijuana. Hosken developed the test as part of a 1½-year research project required for graduation, working with a graduate student at Arkansas State University. Between them, the two sought to improve drug tests required by the National Institute on Drug Abuse at companies that use professional drivers. Hosken worked on the PCP element of the test. His portion of the research is complete and he is to present it in the spring during the school's science fair. For the test to be used commercially, it would need approval from the Food and Drug Administration — after extensive checks. Hosken plans to major in biomedical engineering in college. http://www.happynews.com/news/11142006/student-says-drug-test-foolproof.htm -- WebBooks Amazing Amazon Store: http://astore.amazon.co.uk/webbooks05
