Press Release: Cannabis Party Called Off

At an Extraordinary Conference of the Legalise Cannabis Alliance held in
Norwich on November 11th, the group voted to de-register the Party and
continue their fight as an pressure group, under the same name.

The LCA registered as a political party in 1999, and has contested over
75 seats at Parliamentary and local council elections, gaining up to
7.5% of the vote.

Alun Buffry, Nominating Officer of the Party, said: "I think most of us
are fed up with politics, but it is the politicians who must be
persuaded to change the law.

"It takes a great deal of effort raising funds and standing for
elections, and, considering we were up against parties with huge bank
accounts, we did remarkably well. We have shown that cannabis
legalisation, even as a single issue, can win votes.

"Now it is up to the other political parties to win those votes if they
want them."

Mr Buffry had announced his registration from the post of Nominating
Officer from January next year, and the Conference elected Esteban
Otton, originally from Chile, as a replacement. The Nominating Officer
authorises candidates to use the Party name and emblems in elections..

Mr Otton said: "I am over-joyed at being chosen for this position,
although, obviously, changes will have to be made. I believe I can bring
fresh air and new energy and support to the LCA now that we have
de-registered, including more support from other parties. We will
continue to push the Government to rid ourselves of this unjust and
unworkable cannabis prohibition and make full productive use of this
remarkable plant. We must stop the arrest and punishment of people who
have done no harm."

Notes for Editors

Howard Marks was one of the first legalise cannabis candidates in the
1997 general election.

The LCA stood 13 candidates in the general election of 2001, and 21 in 2004.

The LCA had its first party broadcast on TV and radio in wales in 2004.

The LCA has over 3000 endorsements for its Principles, Aims and Proposals.
