UK: Police swoop on cannabis factory

Biggleswade Chronicle

Friday 24 Nov 2006

---
Police raid shuts down a drugs factory in Biggleswade just yards away
from a lower school.

More than 200 cannabis plants were taken from the beleaguered Brunts
Lane house, believed to have been used by former tenants to host
swingers' parties.

And an electrician had to be called to the site as the crooks had
tampered with the electricity supply - making it too dangerous for
police to enter.

Police executed the warrant at around 7.30am on Tuesday (November 21)
after acting on local intelligence - and say they have now carried out
more than 40 similar raids across the county this year.

But neighbours say they had no reason to suspect anything untoward and
were completely unaware of the scale of the drugs operation taking place
on their doorstep.

One said: "I thought it was funny because the curtains were always
drawn, even when we had that really hot summer. It just seemed odd at
the time but we thought it must be strange people or people who work at
night."

"I thought it was a nice little lane but what do we get? Swingers and
druggies."

Another said: "We didn't really know the people that were there, we
didn't really see anybody. The police were here all day. It was almost
impossible to park down here on Tuesday morning, the poor mums going to
the school didn't know what had hit them."

Detective Sergeant Mick Sparks said: "This is an intelligence led
operation which sends out a clear message that Bedfordshire Police will
not tolerate drugs and those suspected of supplying them can expect to
feel the full weight of the law."
