UK: Cannabis grower jailed for a year
Nigel Freedman The Argus
Wednesday 29 Nov 2006 A man who set up a cannabis factory in his loft has been jailed for a year. Police found 114 plants when they raided David Cannings' home in July. He had diverted the electricity supply at the house in Bentswood Road, Haywards Heath, to cultivate them. Cannings, 22, used hydroponic equipment to water the young plants and provide light for them, Hove Crown Court was told. Rachel Beckett, prosecuting, said there were enough plants to produce between nine and 13kgs of cannabis a year. She said they could have produced between 2,736 and 3,648 deals, worth between £11,300 and £91,200 a year. Roger Booth, defending, said: "Cannings told police after his arrest he was growing the plants for his personal use. He had no intention at the time of selling to others." Cannings appeared for sentence today after pleading guilty at an earlier hearing to cultivating and possessing cannabis and extracting electricity. Judge Guy Anthony said: "This number of plants are clearly going to produce cannabis way beyond that necessary for personal use. "I am prepared to accept the intention initially was to provide it for your own personal use. "But there were a very large number of plants and it is idle to pretend the excess you did not use yourself would have been thrown away. "It is inevitable, in my view, it would have found its way into the hands of other cannabis smokers." Police raided Cannings' home on July 4. They were forced to call in experts from EDF Energy to make the electricity supply to the house safe. Chief Inspector Chris Ball told The Argus at the time: "We will continue to crack down on individuals intent on cultivating cannabis in Mid Sussex. "Although it has been reclassified to a Class C drug, cultivating it and supplying it remains a serious offence and can mean up to 14 years in prison." http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/localnews/display.var.1048060.0.cannabis_grower_jailed_for_a_year.php -- Please sign these petitions: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/search?q=Cannabis+ WebBooks Amazing Amazon Store: http://astore.amazon.co.uk/webbooks05
