UK: 28 drug users apply to be cops

Metro

Sunday 19 Nov 2006

---
Turning up at a recruitment centre high on drugs is not the best
preparation for a career in the police force - as 28 young hopefuls
found to their cost.

They fell foul of routine tests for illegal substances given to all
new applicants by West Midlands police.

Figures made public under the Freedom of Information Act show that
five recruits tested positive for class A drugs last year.

One showed signs of having taken a class B drug and a further nine
tested positive for class C drugs. Another 13 had taken doses of
illegal medication.

The West Midlands force has confirmed that the 28 failed to make it to
the next stage of the recruitment process.

In the wake of the tests, the force now plans to carry out random drug
tests on serving officers. Chief Insp Graeme Pallister said the tests
were needed to stamp out corruption.

He said: 'Possession of controlled drugs is a crime and involves the
supply of drugs from a dealer, which can involve staff effectively
socialising with suppliers.'

The Metropolitan Police began random testing of officers earlier this
year after a pledge to crack down on middle-class users by
commissioner Sir Ian Blair.

A report also said that drug use was a threat to Scotland Yard's reputation.

Surrey police started random tests in April. So far only one out of
258 officers tested was found to have smoked cannabis.
