UK: Cannabis factory shut down in police swoop

Sheffield Today

Wednesday 06 Dec 2006

---
POLICE have smashed a huge cannabis enterprise after swooping on a
Sheffield house - in the 18th raid of its kind this year.
Officers found at least £150,000 of cannabis plants growing in almost
every room of the three-bedroom terrace house in Staniforth Road, Sheffield.
A 30-year-old Vietnamese man found in the living room of the property
was arrested on suspicion of producing Class C drugs and was today being
questioned at Attercliffe police station.
Det Sgt Bob Chapman said: "This is the latest in an epidemic of cannabis
producers. Every major city in the country has a problem with this sort
of crime and Sheffield is no different.
"They are easy to set up and operate, the profits can be huge and the
penalties in this country aren't as tough as in others - so they think
it is worth taking the risk. But sooner or later they will get caught
and they will almost always receive a prison sentence."
Eight officers from South Yorkshire Police's Drugs Squad and the
Intelligence Unit stormed the property at 10am yesterday and found
hundreds of plants growing in the living room and all three bedrooms.
There were seedlings growing in the cellar.
The furniture from the house was piled in the kitchen to make way for
the complex heating and lighting equipment.
Officers said the bath was filled with water and feed and was fitted
with a pump.
Officers have this year uncovered 17 other cannabis factories across
Sheffield, including a £340,000 haul from a house in Standon Drive
Wincobank.
DS Chapman added: "We are making a very positive impact into this kind
problem.
"We will continue to take positive action in response to the concerns of
the residents in our communities, and steps will be taken to locate and
close these kind of premises."
