UK: Police find UKP20,000 worth of cannabis plants in house

Swindon Advertiser

Wednesday 06 Dec 2006

---
A RAID on a cannabis factory has uncovered £20,000 worth of the drug.

Police found up to 300 plants filling every room apart from one in a
three-bedroom house in Stratton Road.

Officers are linking the discovery to a string of raids carried out on
cannabis factories in the town earlier in the year.

Those were in places such as Edgar Row Close, Wroughton, Okebourne Park,
Liden and Downland Close, Redland.

Nobody has been arrested following the bust on Monday afternoon and
police are now trying to trace the people responsible.

The raid came after an anonymous tip-off from a member of the public and
police have reiterated the importance of the Adver-backed Swindon Drugs
Hotline.

Detective Inspector Mark Garrett, of Swindon CID said: "We knew when we
did that big batch of raids before that there was going to be one or two
more and this is part of that series I am sure.

"The three-bedroomed semi detached house was unoccupied at the time,
although there were signs of habitation. Officers searched the house and
seized £20,000 worth of cannabis plants and associated paraphernalia.

"Virtually the entire house, with the exception of one small upstairs
room, was being used to cultivate cannabis plants.

"Inquiries are now under way to find the people who have been living or
visiting there."

DI Garrett urged anyone with information on drugs to call the hotline.

He said: "We appeal to the public to continue to contact us if they have
any suspicions about what might be going on in their neighbourhoods.

"The kind of information we need to know is who, what, where, and if
possible how they know someone is involved.

"This is a successful seizure and the police are always proactive in
their approach to fight the battle against drugs."

Millions of pounds worth of cannabis were seized following raids on 12
properties in the town over a period of eight weeks beginning in July.
