Australia: New cannabis laws
Sky News Australia
Thursday 07 Dec 2006 Anyone caught growing cannabis could be thrown behind bars, under tough new legislation passed by South Australia's upper house. Under the news laws anyone caught growing cannabis plants could faces fines of up to $5,000 or jail time. The bill's supporters say the drug's to blame for spiralling mental illness rates and property crime, and the current punishment doesn't fit the crime. Family First member, Dennis Hood, says 'people that use cannabis are six times more likely to suffer from schizophrenic, and the laws need to reflect that.' The bills supporters also say it will help keep track of repeat offenders, because convictions will be recorded. However, the government has indicated it's unlikely to support such radical reforms because it believes the current penalties are adequate. http://www.skynews.com.au/story.asp?id=142895 -- Please sign these petitions: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/search?q=Cannabis+ WebBooks Amazing Amazon Store: http://astore.amazon.co.uk/webbooks05
