Letter: Cannabis Law isn't Working
The Sentinel
Tuesday 12 Dec 2006 Sir, - Recent media reports have shown that the UK has the highest drug use in Europe. In fact, one poll had 30 per cent of 15 to 34-year-olds admitting to using cannabis last year. This is in spite of 35 years of the Misuse of Drugs Act, an Act which has contributed hugely to us also having the highest prison population in Europe.Prohibition of cannabis clearly isn't working, and places supply and quality control in the hands of dealers. Most users know the dangers of cannabis resin being adulterated with all kinds of toxins, from Ketamin to animal faeces. Now, cannabis is being sold containing ground-up grit, sand or glass, to add weight. The safest way to limit risks should be to grow cannabis for your own use. The law, however, deals with those who buy cannabis from dealers much more leniently than those who grow for themselves. This means much harsher penalties for personal cultivation then for possession, benefiting only dealers. The Legalise Cannabis Alliance, a campaign group established in the UK in March 1999, has petitioned No 10 Downing Street to remove cannabis from the Misuse of Drugs Act and associated laws. The petition can be signed at: petitions.pm.gov.uk/Cannabis. Please sign, and help to end cannabis prohibition.
