UK: Former Town player jailed
Times and Star
Thursday 14 Dec 2006 A FORMER Workington Town player caught by police transporting more than £100,000 worth of cannabis on its way through Cumbria has been jailed for two years. Howard Burns, whose roofing business had cash flow problems, stood to gain £500 by ferrying the drugs between Bolton and Gretna. A judge told the 47-year-old, of Newlands Lane, Cockermouth, that he had now lost his reputation as someone who was hardworking and trustworthy. He had been tempted by the financial reward, but had not considered the end result. Recorder Paul Grundy said: “You knew that those who deal in cannabis take advantage of the young, weak, dependent and addicted.” Burns was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court after admitting possessing cannabis with intent to supply and possessing amphetamines. Prosecutor Tim Evans said police stopped the vehicle that Burns was travelling in close to Burton services on the M6 on June 16 and discovered almost 25 kilograms of cannabis in the back. Its street value was more than £100,000. He gave officers a false address and they found the property empty. But when they went to his real home they also found amphetamines worth about £500 in a vehicle Burns told officers that he had collected what he knew was ‘pot’ from a man somewhere near the ground of Bolton Wanderers Football Club to take it to Gretna. Frank Nance, defending, said Burns was upset and annoyed he had put himself in his present position. He had been doing a roofing job in Carlisle and wanted cash for raw materials. He met someone he thought might lend him the cash – but instead was offered the chance to courier the drugs. http://www.timesandstar.co.uk/news/viewarticle.aspx?id=445906
