UK: PC follows his big nose to huge drugs haul

Cambridge Evening News

Saturday 16 Dec 2006

---
A COMMUNITY policeman sniffed out one of the biggest stashes of cannabis
ever found in Cambridge while out walking the beat.

The officer was walking along Staffordshire Street in Cambridge when he
noticed the pungent smell coming from a house.

On Wednesday six community beat officers raided the property and found
£112,000 worth of cannabis resin and cocaine worth up to £10,000.

Detective Sergeant Nick Skipworth said: "They didn't expect to find what
they did so it was a bit of a shock."

The policemen walked into the house through an unlocked door and Pc Tom
Gallagher found a bag in a bin which contained 10 cannabis bars - worth
£1,000 each.

Three people were arrested and further searches revealed 52 more bars in
the boot of a car, and 50 in the shed. Altogether about 27kg of cannabis
resin was discovered, which would fetch up to about £112,000. Officers
also discovered 68 grams of high purity cocaine in a kitchen cupboard,
which could fetch between £8,000-£10,000 at street value. Det Sgt
Skipworth said: "When you think about the humble beginnings of this
investigation it is amazing to think where we are now. It was highly
unexpected."

"It is the biggest quantity of cannabis in Cambridge that I can recall."

He also praised the PC Chris Down for smelling the cannabis whilst on
street patrol and said: "I would think there will now be a lot of
parents in Cambridge who will not have to worry so much."

PC Down said: "This is an excellent result for proactive policing for
the east neighbourhood team officers. Whilst we were on routine patrols
in the area we noticed a strong smell of cannabis. We then narrowed it
down to one house in particular and updated the intelligence systems.
"On the back of that we got a warrant from the magistrates' court and a
few days later executed the warrant. It was down to good policing as
well as good luck as we didn't expect to find a haul amounting to £120,000."

* James Scott, 35, of Grange Gardens, Cambridge, and Neil Chivers, 38,
of Staffordshire Street, Cambridge, appeared at Cambridge Magistrates'
Court yesterday (Friday, 15 December) charged with drug related offences
following the bust. Scott is charged with possession with intent to
supply cannabis and Chivers is charged with allowing premises to be used
for the supply of drugs, and possession with intent to supply cocaine.
The pair were remanded in custody and the case was adjourned until
Wednesday, December 20. Samantha Chivers, 23, of Staffordshire Street,
is charged with allowing premises to be used to supply cannabis. She has
been bailed to return to Parkside Police Station in Cambridge on Monday.
