Letter: Make Prison a Certainty

In respect of the letter by Dilys Wood on Tuesday about drugs, a valid
point is made in the fact that those who contrive to not only corrupt
but also rob their clients are dealt with more leniently than those who
wish to cultivate their own supply as a safer and cheaper alternative.
However, the fact remains that this is a controlled substance, and is
being used or made illegally. That being said, let's look at another
alternative to the relaxing or removal of the laws. Why not make it a
set punishment for all concerned, whether they be user or supplier, that
conviction due to the possession of any controlled substance, should
result in a guaranteed custodial sentence? If we look at the point of
the prison system being overcrowded, isn't it more likely that a
guaranteed sentence will deter far more from this action than is being
threatened by the present "slap on the wrist" attitude of the system
that is already an obvious failure. this will lower the burden on the
system, surely?
