UK: Cannabis used to 'help sleep'

Cambs Times

---
JUST six days after police used a search warrant to raid a house in
Russell Avenue, March, one of those arrested appeared in court charged
with possession of drugs.

Prosecutors told Fenland magistrates on Wednesday that they discovered
Gareth Watson with more than 10 grams of herbal cannabis.

Watson, 26, was arrested on suspicion of intending to supply the class C
drug to others but he explained he used cannabis to help him sleep and
reduce his panic attacks.

Watson admitted possessing the drug on December 14 but claimed he smoked
cannabis to help with panic attacks.

"Police went to the address to execute a search warrant issued by
magistrates," said prosecutor John Nooijen. "A search of the bedroom was
conducted, and police seized a quantity of herbal cannabis."

A doctor was consulted, who said the drug would not help with panic
attacks or sleeping, but did aid relaxation, he added.

Mitigating, Anita Waterman said Watson suffered from agoraphobia, panic
attacks and depression, and felt that smoking cannabis relaxed him and
dampened down his panic attacks and helped him sleep.

"He has been waiting for seven weeks for an appointment to see a doctor
to seek a legal alternative," she added.

"He produced the drug to the police when they came through the door, and
explained why he was in possession of it."

He was given a one-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay £60 costs.

One of the officers involved in the raid, Pc Katie Jackson, said: "This
was a successful operation which continues to demonstrate that those who
choose to supply drugs within the Fenland area will be targeted.

"I would urge members of the public to contact police if they suspect
any properties to be used in the supply of drugs."
