AN INTERSTATE drug run worth more than $70,000 has been thwarted by an
alert sniffer dog.

Crash, a six-year-old Australian Customs Service black labrador,
detected 4kg of cannabis hidden in 10 vacuum-sealed bags packed into a
suitcase at Adelaide Airport's domestic terminal on Friday.

And his reward for the spectacular find - a rolled up hand towel.

"It is a toy reward to play tug-of-war with," Customs dog handler Diana
French said. "He will think it is the greatest thing ever.

"It was great to see all the training pay off and Crash seemed pretty
excited too. He was pumped."

A 36-year-old man from Salisbury North has been charged with one count
of possessing a controlled substance for sale or supply.

He appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court yesterday afternoon. The
man did not enter a plea and was released on bail to appear in court
again later this week.

He was waiting to check-in his luggage on a domestic flight to Sydney
when the drugs were detected. "Crash was working up in Cairns for about
four years and only came down here in June last year. As far as I know
this is his biggest bust yet," Ms French said.

"He's been responsible for some cannabis finds in international mail and
that sort of thing but not of this size. This was very exciting."

The Australian Federal Police estimate the drugs would have amounted to
more than 2000 street deals. It is the first significant drug seizure
for the AFP's newly formed Unified Policing Model at Adelaide Airport.

Police targeting potential threats to aviation security and the
detection of drugs, including cannabis, have been increased at
designated airports around Australia.
