Scotland: Court orders cannabis cure 'crusader' to pay UKP15,000
The Scotsman Friday 19 Jan 2007 A CANNABIS "crusader" who escaped a jail sentence after claiming to grow the drug for medical purposes has been ordered to hand over £15,000 crime profits. IT consultant Stephen Renton, 40, maintained that he was trying to develop a pain-killing cream to help his mother. Firefighters discovered 770 cannabis plants under cultivation in 2004 at houses in Newtongrange, in Midlothian, after an electrical fault led to a fire. Detectives estimated that the find - the largest crop seized by Lothian and Borders police at the time - had a potential street value of £77,000. Renton admitted illegally producing a controlled drug and being concerned in the supply of cannabis but in 2005 was spared a prison sentence when he appeared at the High Court in Edinburgh. Judge Lady Dorrian told him she was prepared to deal with him by imposing a community service order for 240 hours. But the Crown continued to pursue Renton under proceeds of crime confiscation legislation. A hearing in the action was due to start at the High Court today, but Renton's counsel, Chris Shead, told judge Lord Carloway that an agreement for the confiscation of £15,000 had been reached. Renton had lived next door to his parents in Newtongrange, and in 2002 knocked down a dividing wall in the attic to make space for his cannabis project. http://news.scotsman.com/edinburgh.cfm?id=100022007 -- http://www.lca-uk.org/lcaforum/viewforum.php?f=6
