UK: Under-18 Pot Let Off

The Mirror

Tuesday 23 Jan 2007

---
CHILDREN caught smoking cannabis will no longer be automatically arrested.

The Association of Chief Police Officers has also introduced "three
strikes and you're out" warnings for adult users.

The guidelines said officers should find "less intrusive" ways of
dealing with under-18s, such as escorting them home.

But a child under 10 caught smoking pot should be considered "at risk"
and referred to a child protection team.

Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said: "This is a dangerous signal to
send young people."

But DrugScope said: "It strikes the right balance between possessing
small amounts and supply."
