Ireland: Drug users warned over bogus cannabis
Dublin People
Wednesday 24 Jan 2007 NORTHSIDE drug users are being warned that large amounts of cannabis have been contaminated and could pose a serious health risk. Dublin based agency Crosscare say they have received calls from Irish cannabis users who are concerned they may have bought dodgy drugs. Drug campaigners in the UK issued warnings about the cannabis before Christmas and it’s now feared some may now be circulating in Dublin. It’s believed that cannabis with tiny fragments of glass or sand was first spotted in France last September before turning up in the UK in November. The cannabis is being called ‘grit weed’ by UK drug users but experts say it has the potential to cause a serious health risk. It’s understood the cannabis is riddled with small glass beads which are usually used for sandblasting and reflective road marking paint. If the particles are small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs they could cause enormous damage. Contaminated leaves can be identified by rubbing them between wetted fingers. The residue will feel gritty if chewed. Drug experts believe the particles have been added to add weight to the drug in an crude effort to bump up profits. Michael McDonagh of Crosscare’s drugs awareness programme said his organisation had received many calls via the agency’s online help facility at www.dap.ie “We have started to receive calls from concerned users of cannabis who believe that they have used the contaminated products,” he said. The symptoms from someone who has used contaminated cannabis include a tight chest which can last for days after smoking. Drug users who experience the symptoms are advised to seek medical assistance, even though the contaminated product is not thought to be life threatening. http://www.dublinpeople.com/
