UK: Ground glass drug alert

Ben Holt

Halifax Evening Courier

Friday 26 Jan 2007

---
DRUG users and doctors have been warned about a deadly batch of cannabis
contaminated with ground glass.

Police believe the drug, known as Grit Weed or Glass Grass, has been
bulked out with ground-up glass by dealers so they can make a higher profit.

Calderdale Primary Care Trust has put hospitals and GPs on high alert.

Reports from other parts of the country have told of users coughing up
blood, suffering severe chest infections, mouth ulcers and throat problems.

Trust spokesman Vicky Pickles said: "The alert has been circulated to
all GPs and health professionals in the area so they can recognise the
symptoms if a patient has them.

"Cannabis is harmful to health but if someone has smoked cannabis and is
experiencing the symptoms of sore mouth, chesty cough, tight chest and
mouth ulcers they should visit their GP as soon as possible."

Analysis of the contaminated class C drug has revealed tiny glass
particles, which resemble naturally occurring crystals found on cannabis
buds, which smokers look for as an indicator of strength.

Experts believe drug gangs are spraying plants with a reflective element
found in paint used for road markings.

The tiny reflective glass beads become embedded in the leaves.

One user, who did not want to be named, said: "I had some of this grit
weed. It felt like my lungs were bleeding.

"I have heard stories from across the country of people buying this. It
is very worrying."

Calderdale police drug team has not yet found any of the contaminated
cannabis in the area.

Chief Inspector Gary Parker said: "We take cannabis seriously and anyone
who is cultivating or selling cannabis will be dealt with firmly.

"Anyone who sells controlled drugs is a priority for us.

"Anyone who potentially affects community safety through interfering
with any controlled drug to make it more harmful is a very, very serious
matter.

"It is something that we would deal with in the most appropriate way."
