UK: Cannabis contaminated with glass sparks UK-wide warning
Judith Duffy Sunday Herald
Sunday 28 Jan 2007 A HEALTH alert has been issued to the NHS over batches of cannabis contaminated with tiny particles of glass which are currently circulating in the UK. The department of health issued a letter to GPs, nurses and pharmacists warning that patients may turn up suffering health problems after smoking the contaminated drug. Symptoms, which have been reported after use of the so-called"gritweed", include a sore mouth, ulcers, persistent coughs and a tight chest lasting a few days. The letter states: "While there are no reported serious health effects to date from this contamination, we are not yet able to determine fully what are the possible or likely risks to the health of cannabis smokers." Martin Barnes, chief executive of charity DrugScope, said they had been aware of reports about the contaminated cannabis since December. He said: "Anecdotal reports suggest gritweed' is being sold in many areas of the UK. Our advice to the public would be, as always, not to use cannabis. If users are unable or unwilling to stop using the drug, however, they should check the product before they smoke or ingest it. "Contaminated samples may appear sticky or slightly shiny.Users are advised to wet their fingers and rub some leaves between them - if the residue tastes gritty it is likely that the drug is contaminated." http://www.sundayherald.com/
