UK: Cannabis was for pain relief - drug dealer
The Times Tuesday 23 Jan 2007 A CANNABIS dealer, caught with more than 1,000 pounds of the class C drug, claimed he smoked 40 joints a day for medical reasons. But Stuart Duncan (43), of Strathmore Avenue, Coupar Angus, was warned that he faces a jail term when he returns for sentence at Perth Sheriff Court next week. Duncan pled guilty to being concerned in the supply of cannabis resin at his home between May 1 and July 26. Depute fiscal Keith Robertson said police raided the accused’s house after receiving a tip-off that he was dealing in the drug. They discovered two bars of cannabis, weighing 501 grammes, worth a maximum of 1340 pounds. Duncan also had 440 pounds in cash. Officers also recovered various drugs paraphernalia, including plastic bags, scales, a chopping board and three mobile phones. When interviewed, Duncan said that the cannabis was for himself and some of his friends. A solicitor said that the accused suffered from peripheral vascular disease, which caused pain in his legs, and he smoked the cannabis to prevent him becoming addicted to painkillers. Duncan is unemployed and he and friends decided to pool their cash and buy cannabis in bulk. If they bought smaller amounts it could cost 50 pounds a day. Sheriff Robert McCreadie said he didn’t accept there wasn’t a commercial aspect to the cannabis dealing and warned Duncan he was considering imposing a three-month jail term. But he deferred sentence to allow Duncan to make arrangements for his sick wife.
