UK: Cameron Drugs Claim
Sky News
Saturday 10 Feb 2007 David Cameron is under renewed pressure over claims that he has used drugs in the past. Several Sunday newspapers allege he was almost expelled from Eton College for smoking cannabis. They say the future Tory leader was almost thrown out after being caught up in the school's worst ever drugs scandal. Police were called in and 7 pupils were expelled in 1982 after being caught dealing in and smoking cannabis. Mr Cameron -- who until now has refused to say if he took drugs -- was said to have been hauled before the headmaster after another pupil informed on him. Mr Cameron, who at the time was just 15, was forced him to admit he had smoked cannabis. He avoided expulsion, but was put under the top public school's equivalent of house arrest by being 'gated'. According to a new book called 'Cameron, The New Conservative' which is being serialised in the Mail On Sunday next month, He carried on smoking cannabis when he went to Oxford. Mr Cameron has repeatedly refused to answer questions about whether or not he had taken drugs. He has insisted he has the right to stay quiet on the issue, despite a series of provocative calls to liberalise drug laws. He hinted that he had taken drugs by saying he had had a "normal" university life, but insisted on his right to privacy. In a short statement Conservative Central Office said: "We are not saying anything further about the allegations. "Politicians are entitled to a private past but the events referred to took place over 25 years ago. "We are not confirming or denying it." But the allegations are bound to anger the right of the Tory party and provide ammunition for the government which which to attack Mr Cameron. Gordon Brown, who is likely to be Mr Cameron's opponent for Number 10 at the next general election. has publicly said that he has never taken drugs. http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-1251005,00.html
