UK: I Did Things I Regret

Sky News

Sunday 11 Feb 2007

---
Tory leader David Cameron has spoken publicly about claims he smoked
cannabis at Eton saying: "Like many people I did things I regret".

But he refused to be drawn further on the issue telling press gathered
outside his home that his past was "private".

The claims, that he was disciplined at school for smoking cannabis,
emerged in a biography of the Conservative leader which is being
serialised in The Independent On Sunday and The Mail On Sunday.

It alleges that when he was 15 he admitted using the drug at the
exclusive private school.

A number of boys were allegedly expelled for smoking the drug in 1982,
but Mr Cameron escaped that punishment because he had not been dealing.

It is said to have been the Berkshire college's worst-ever drugs scandal.

On Sunday Mr Cameron said: "Like many people, I did things when I was
young I shouldn't have done and that I regret."

But he added: "I am not issuing a denial. I do believe that politicians
are entitled to a private past, that remains private.

"Now that I am an MP you are perfectly entitled to follow me around, and
poke cameras up my nose - you can even come and watch me cook Sunday
lunch if you like - but I am entitled to a private past.

"It's an important principle and one I am going to stand by."

Mr Cameron has consistently refused to say whether or not he had ever
taken drugs.

Two years ago the 40-year-old commented everyone should be allowed to
"err and stray in their past".

He was criticised at the time for refusing to disclose whether he had
ever taken hard drugs, although he said a close relative had had a
"dreadful problem".
