So, did he or didn't he?

It's a question that has been asked over and over of David Cameron
throughout his entire time as leader of the Conservative party.

The issue of whether or not he smoked cannabis while a schoolboy at Eton
reared its head again with a vengeance at the weekend, as new
'revelations' hit the national Press.

Mr Cameron, it is claimed, did partake of the wacky baccy in his
formative years and now the pressure is on him to confirm or deny it.

As he has done before, Mr Cameron refuses to be drawn either way,
insisting that his life before politics is private.

Try telling that to the national media, Mr C.

A lot of ordinary people probably couldn't give a tinker's cuss, but the
Press obsession with Mr Cameron's alleged fondness for a joint will do
him damage in the long run if he doesn't clear things up once and for all.

He may well have had a few puffs and even been disciplined by the school
for doing so, as is being claimed. But in the great scheme of things, so
what?

If he rolled a few as a young man, he is only guilty of being stupid, a
'crime' many teenagers commit on more than one occasion.

Even if he did, it's hardly likely to bring his political career to a
halt. But keeping schtum, or issuing vague statements like the one we
got at the weekend, will do exactly that.

While the self-righteous feeding frenzy over Mr Cameron's alleged
teenage indiscretions goes on, he doesn't have a chance of being heard
on far more important issues, like Iraq, the economy and global warming.

Mr Cameron has to clear this up once and for all so he - and his party -
can get on with the important business at hand.

It's time to bring this matter to a close. The only person who can do
that is Mr Cameron himself.
