Letter: Drug prohibition wrecks lives

Tuesday 13 Feb 2007 David Cameron should consider himself lucky. A criminal conviction for possession of cannabis could have put an end to a promising career. How many bright young lives have been, and are still being, wrecked through school expulsions and criminal proceedings due to the insane prohibition of this plant. The alleged negative effects on a small minority of users pale into insignificance compared with the damage being done by prohibition, and the divide it has opened between millions of law-abiding people and the authorities who administer justice for this so-called crime. Mr Cameron asks that we respect the privacy of his past; I ask him if he will respect my privacy now and allow me to make use of what is, after all, just a plant. STEVE CLEMENTS YORK
