UK: Death of peace and rainbows campaigner - Patman
Milton Keynes Citizen
Thursday 15 Feb 2007 MILTON Keynes lost one of its most colourful characters when Legalise Cannabis campaigner Patman Denning died earlier this month. The 42-year-old, who suffered from Multiple Sclerosis, is best known for gaining 500 votes – 1.1 per cent of the total – when he stood as the Legalise Cannabis Alliance candidate for Milton Keynes South West in the 2001 general election. His son Liam told the Citizen: "I am not a smoker myself but campaigning for the legalisation of cannabis was something he lived for. He did not take any prescribed medication for his MS – he relied completely on cannabis. "I was proud that he had something to say and stood up and said it. It was amazing he got as far as he did with it. It was like a full-time job for him." Patman – renowned for his catchphrase "peace and rainbows", his jester's hat and bright jumpers –s even took part in a parachute jump to raise money and awareness about cannabis related causes despite being wheelchair bound. At the time he said: "I really felt like I was flying with the birds. I was flapping my arms about looking like I was a bird. I was laughing all the way through it." Patman was born and grew up in Oxford and moved to Milton Keynes 19 years ago and worked as a builder and on the waltzers at a travelling fair. About 10 years ago he developed MS and moved to a purpose-built home in Borodin Court, Old Farm Park. Patman died at Milton Keynes General Hospital on February 1 after contracting pneumonia and a bowel infection. His funeral takes place at Tattenhoe Pavilion at 2pm tomorrow (Friday).
