UK: Legalise cannabis activist is arrested - Patman

Milton Keynes Citizen

Thursday 29 Nov 2001

---
Legalise Cannabis campaigner Patman Denning has been arrested... for
possession of the drug.

Patman, aged 37, is wheelchair-bound with multiple sclerosis and claims
smoking cannabis helps relieve his constant pain.
He stood for the Legalise Cannabis Alliance in Milton Keynes at the
general election in June.

The party's aim is to open Dutch-style coffee shops which would sell
cannabis legally, and to quash all marijuana-related convictions.
It also seeks to reintroduce hemp into society.

Patman, of Old Farm Park, was arrested during a protest with fellow
legalise cannabis campaigners outside the Greater Manchester police station.

They were protesting over a previous raid on Britain's first ever
Dutch-style coffee shop in Stockport. The coffee shop owner, Colin
Davies, is currently remanded in custody charged with two counts of
permitting cannabis to be smoked on his premises and two of possessing
cannabis with intent to supply.

Davies also faces two charges with unauthorised drugs possession and one
of supplying cannabis.

Patman Denning appeared before Stockport magistrates on Tuesday, and at
his request, his case was referred to Crown Court. He was granted
unconditional bail until January 11, when he will reappear before
Stockport Magistrates, for a date to be set for his trial at Manchester
Crown Court.
