UK: Contaminated drug puts users at risk
icTamworth
Thursday 01 Mar 2007 A batch of dangerous cannabis which has flooded the market and found in Tamworth has sparked a police warning to users. The warning comes after users across the UK have fallen ill because of the dodgy drugs and the police have also seized a case of the contaminated cannabis in Tamworth in December. The "grit weed" looks normal but has tiny glass beads embedded in the leaves which are visible to the naked eye. If smoked it can lead to chesty coughs, mouth ulcers and sore throats. Officers believe the cannabis is being produced on an industrial scale and suspect the contaminant is an industrial spray used for glass frosting. The high pressure aerosol consists of propellant, lubricant and silicate abrasives. Detective Sgt Alan Davies said: "Although cannabis is an illegal drug, we would advise users not to smoke this 'grit weed' and dealers not to sell it. "Anyone who thinks they may have some contaminated cannabis in their possession should not smoke it and destroy it." Contaminated leaves can be identified by rubbing them between wetted fingers. The residue will feel gritty. Anyone coming into contact with the contaminated drug should ring Staffordshire Police on 08453 302010.
