In 1998 after an exhaustive inquiry, the [UK] House of Lords Select
committee on Science and Technology recommended that the Government, as
a matter of urgency made cannabis available for doctors to prescribe.

On the 15th January 2007 at Carlisle Court of Justice the Judge gave
THC4MS three a 9 month custodial sentence (suspended for 2 years) for
supplying "CannaBiz chocolate" free to 1800 MS sufferers, stating that
their motive was altruistic.

On Monday 5 March 2007 Carlisle Court of Justice will become a battle
ground again when a 68-year-old grandmother with several disabilities is
to appear in to face the charge of cultivating 4 cannabis plants for her
own medicinal use.

This trial was originally scheduled for Newcastle Crown Court but was
rescheduled for Carlisle Crown Court after Mrs Tabram registered a
complaint with the Lord Chamberlains office that a statement made by the
judge in a previous trial, which was crucial for her defence, had been
deleted from the court records.

Pat Tabram, claims she made a statement in open court, that she would
not supply anyone with cannabis, but she said she not stop medicating
with it because it is far better than any tablets you can get from the
doctor.

According to Mrs Tabram, The Judge acknowledge she would not stop
medicating.. but made it clear that Pat should not continue to supply
cannabis and if she did she could be brought back to court and sent to
jail for six months.

Mrs Tabram will plead "not guilty" on the grounds that it is her right
to self medicate with cannabis to combat pain, depression, recurring
face rash and internal injuries caused by previously used prescription
medications.

Mrs Tabram who has some legal knowledge will be conducting her own defence.

[If] found guilty all options are open to the Judge for disposing of the
current case of cultivation up to a maximum of 14 years in jail.

The Judge will also have to decide whether to send her to Jail for 6
month for breach of the suspended sentence imposed in 2005!

Don Barnard, of the Legalise Cannabis Alliance who was sentenced to 50
hours community sentence for growing 5 cannabis plants in 1995 to help
his wife cope with arthritis said:

"It's 'very wrong' that chronically sick patients have to choose between
living in severe pain or risk themselves or one of their relatives being
sent to prison for buying cannabis or growing it for medicinal use."

"The law as it stands has become a proxy for the control of public
order. It produces more harm than it prevents. It is a drag on both the
police criminal justice system resources… it does not protected people
from bad quality cannabis, It criminalises large numbers of otherwise
law abiding, mainly young, people to the detriment of their
future....."The Misuse of Drugs Act must be amended to stop this evil
application of the law."

stood for parliament in the UK general election in 2005 .

The grandma who eats cannabis, or Cannabis Gran as she has become known

introduced to cannabis by a neighbour three years ago when she was in a

The UK Green Party: have also declared their support for 'Granny' Tabram

UK Green Party drugs spokesperson Shane Collins, said, "The government
have prohibited a free and effective medicine in favour of expensive
pharmaceutical drugs with negative side effects. The real crime is for
the government to criminalise and jail sick people for healing
themselves and others."

"Patricia Tabram case should galvanise action to change the damaging and
expensive prohibition."
