Tuesday 13 Mar 2007 The number of cannabis farms being uncovered by police has trebled over the last two years, new research shows. Drug information charity DrugScope says an average of three dope farms have been raided each day in the last six months. In the last two years, more than 1,500 have been shut down in London alone. Ten years ago only 11% of cannabis sold in the UK was grown here, but now the figure is higher than 60%. Police say 80% of farms have more than 50 plants, with an average of 400 plants recovered per raid. Most use simple growing systems - overhead lights, fans and plant pots. Around two-thirds to three-quarters of cannabis farms are run by Vietnamese criminal gangs. Initially found in London, they have since sprung up in south Wales, Birmingham, East Anglia, Yorkshire and the North East. Many of the growers caught are illegal immigrants, and police have found them living in cupboards, tiny utility rooms and lofts to maximise space for plants.
