UK: Young grower of cannabis in Downham gets three-year sentence
Lynn News
Monday 09 Apr 2007 A TEENAGER living in a Downham house where 403 cannabis plants were growing has been sent to a young offenders' institution for three years and four months. Man phu Hoan, aged 19, originally from Vietnam, was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court on Wednesday after an earlier hearing where he admitted being concerned in the production of the plants, which were capable of yielding a crop worth well over £300,000. Officers searched 57, Retreat Estate, on December 19 last year and found what was described as a "sophisticated cannabis growing factory," where the electricity supply had been bypassed with transformers and holes cut through walls, ceilings and floors to run cabling from transformers. CROPS John Morgans, prosecuting, said the plants were capable of producing three crops of cannabis a year, with a street value of £300,000. He added that Hoang had played a skilled role in maintaining the plants. Mrs Nichola Devas, in mitigation, said Hoang came to England illegally in March 2004 and has worked at times and was studying English. His role was as a caretaker and he should have been paid £100 a week but only received food. Judge Simon Barham said he was not making any recommendation for deportation: "This type of offence has become all too common in Norfolk recently and a severe sentence must be imposed to deter others," he said. http://www.lynnnews.co.uk/V
