Letter: Magistrate right
Ingo Wagenknecht Cambridge Evening News
Wednesday 18 Apr 2007 CAMBRIDGESHIRE magistrate Alan Williams was right to refuse the fine levied indiscriminately against the accused, now charged in any offence which results in a fine. If victims are to be compensated, the receipts from criminals and their assets, are a legitimate, already established measure of doing so. This Government wheeze is indiscriminate revenue raising and I urge everyone who is dragged to court for supplying him/herself with cannabis to ask who the victim is. If that question is not answered by the police or the court magistrates, payment of this fine should be refused. Whatever next?
