Australia: Six arrested under new child protection laws

ABC News

Thursday 17 May 2007

---
Six people have been arrested in Sydney after their children were
allegedly found in houses where drugs were being grown.

Police raided seven homes allegedly used to grow hydroponic cannabis.

During the operation they found six children who had been sleeping in
houses at Cabramatta, Fairfield, Bonnyrigg, Guildford and Smithfield.

Their parents, three men and three women, have been charged under new
laws that carry a maximum penalty of 24 years in jail.

Police also seized more than 1,000 cannabis plants with an estimated
street value of almost $5 million.

The South-West Police Commander, Frank Mennilli, says some of the
children were sleeping just metres away from the plants.

"Not only do you have the odour from the cannabis plants, but you also
have the chemicals that are used in relation to the growth of these
plants," he said.

"You also have a number of risks attached to hydro houses through the
high use of electricity."
