UK: Cannabis protest is a flop
Birmingham Mail Monday 25 Jun 2007 A PLANNED protest inviting people to smoke cannabis at a Birmingham park failed to take place. The Birmingham Mail reported last week how the city council's website's What's On page showed a listing for the "Healing of the Nation's Smokey Bears Picnic", scheduled to be held at 1pm on Sunday at Cannon Hill Park. Smokey Bear is an alias traditionally used by campaigners to organise mass demonstrations to flout laws by smoking cannabis in public. The listing was quickly removed by embarrassed council officials after the Mail brought it to their attention. But on Sunday the park seemed to be empty of drug smokers. A council spokeswoman said: "We do not consider this unauthorised gathering to be an appropriate use of a public park and have not agreed for it to take place. http://www.icbirmingham.co.uk/
