Wales: Cannabis farm is found in city raid
Katie Norman South Wales Echo
Monday 25 Jun 2007 A WOMAN has been charged after police uncovered a cannabis farm in a house. The 43-year-old from Ely, Cardiff, was arrested and charged with cultivating cannabis and possession of heroin after South Wales Police officers raided a home in Spinney Close, Ely. An Ely man was also arrested, but was later released without charge. The raid was organised after police received a tip-off. A team of specialist officers knocked down the door of the house at 7.30am, seizing a small quantity of heroin and around 10 cannabis plants. Pc Jill Edwards said the operation was part of an ongoing crackdown against illegal drugs in the area. She said: “This is further action by the Ely neighbourhood policing team to combat drugs within the area. “We would encourage anyone to get in touch if they have any information.” The raid follows a series of similar operations in South Wales. Police seized 1,000 cannabis plants at a home in Dinas Powys, in the Vale of Glamorgan, in February. And 2,300 plants were found after officers raided the disused Jubilee Hotel in Tylorstown, Rhondda, in April. At least 20 cannabis farms were found in the capital last year and the crackdown is continuing this year. Drugs charity DrugScope believes that more than 60 per cent of the dope sold in the UK is now home grown. The number of farms being uncovered has trebled over the last two years, with about three factories being found by police in the UK every day. http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/
